The course was attended by 41 participants coming from all parts of China.

The first three days were theoretical and consisted in lectures covering the topics of middle ear diseases (chronic otitis media, otosclerosis), facial nerve palsy, disorders of the peripheral vestibular system and temporal bone tumors.

Emphasis was put on the diagnosis, the surgical indications and the surgical management of these conditions. All speakers were experienced surgeons focusing their lectures on how to deal with problems encountered in daily practice. Prof. Wang gave a talk based on his personal experiences with strategies used to prevent surgical complications.

The forth day was practical and the participants had the possibility to dissect cadaver temporal bones in the temporal bone laboratory of our department under the guidance of senior surgeons. The practiced procedures included various types of tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy as well as of stapedotomy and lateral skull base surgery. In addition, live surgical demonstration (mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty, cochlear implant, stapedotomy, subtotal temporal bone resection) were shown during the last two days.

All participants found the course very valuable and were grateful for the received teachings.
